Used Oil and Filters Recycling

Since 1987 it has been illegal to dispose of used oil in sewers, drainage systems, surface or ground waters, water courses or marine waters, by domestic incineration, onto the land or in the trash.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) has certified over 2,700 used oil collection centers in California that will take used oil from the public. Although these centers are not set up to recycle used oil filters, filters can be disposed of at Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Events.

The City of Moreno Valley and the Riverside County Waste Management Department host Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Events at the City Maintenance Yard located at 15670 Perris Blvd. in Moreno Valley. These Events are held in February, March, June and October and are free to all Riverside County residents. Learn more about hazardous waste collection events...

You can participate in oil recycling by following these simple steps:

  • Drain your used oil into a clean container.
  • Do not mix any other materials, including water, with used oil.
  • Take your used oil to a Used Oil Certified Center or the next Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event. Used oil filters can only be disposed of at a HHW Collection Event. They should be drained of any residual oil and stored properly to avoid leakage.
  • Used oil drainer containers are provided to Moreno Valley residents at the HHW Events in Moreno Valley while supplies last.
